Stop Bath is not strictly necessary, but is advised. It is a weak
acid solution which is simply designed to stop development, which
requires alkaline conditions, and to acidify the print/film
before it is placed in the acid fixer - which only works when
acid. The fixer life is thus extended.
Stop bath can be made up at home as 2% Acetic Acid - available
from chemists. It is very economical at only 20 Ml ( ccs. ) per
litre of water and smells of vinegar. That is because vinegar, as
non brewed condiment IS 7% acetic acid ! A smell of vinegar means
the solution is still OK. No smell means throw it away.
Stop Bath can be bought from the photo dealer and usually has a
coloured indicator added that shows when the solution is
exhausted. The same solution is used for prints or negatives.
